The I3S Faculty for the University Penitentiary Center
Motivations and objective
The Sapienza Prison Center serves students with various types of restrictions on personal freedom, including access to cultural content. The i3s Faculty covers highly advanced and innovative cultural topics in the fields of science and technology, but access to degree programs requires specific initial entry levels, as well as often in-person attendance. Furthermore, there are insufficient teaching materials to allow independent preparation for admission or exams.
On the other hand, the i3s Faculty has significant resources in terms of teaching staff, with materials already prepared on extremely innovative topics.
The activity of the third mission project "Finestre su I3S" is aimed at producing teaching materials on innovative topics covered in the faculty's courses.
Output
The output of this activity is the production of short, 10-hour courses, which will focus on current scientific and technological topics and be made available to the Center, which closely monitors the teaching activities of a limited number of individuals.
For example, and not limited to, short courses could be developed such as:
multimedia
artificial intelligence
the foundations of statistics
basic mathematics
...
The specific characteristics of short courses are as follows:
i) they aim to clarify the fundamental aspects of the chosen topic and share technical jargon;
ii) they aim to integrate theoretical notions with concrete examples;
iii) they can be accessed via three possible media: 1) video and audio synchronized with the slides and a reference text; 2) slides accompanied by an audio file commenting on them and a reference text; 3) slides accompanied by a reference text.
Outcome
The outcome will be the provision of accessible materials, even over extended periods, to detainees from various backgrounds and with varying access levels.
For the impact of this activity, which can be measured in the longer term, two directions are identified: first, offering materials that can reduce cultural barriers to the topics covered by the I3S Faculty; second, initiating and maintaining an ongoing exchange between the I3S Faculty and the Penitentiary Center, paving the way for future activities aimed at making the content covered in the Faculty's courses more broadly accessible.
Contribution by teachers, PhD students and technical staff
Professors and/or doctoral students participate by submitting content from an entire course, or a partial contribution to be coordinated with other contributions. Participants prepare their contribution in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and an accompanying video. The presentation template used includes slides based on the Sapienza template, numbered to allow reference to the current slide, and featuring the project logo. The video will be produced. The video will then be edited to produce a separate audio and text transcript. Participants will review the audio and text to prepare the final content, accessible in various formats. Audio and text production will be handled by participants who have agreed to do so..
